FAQs

What is Dhokra art?
Dhokra is one of the world's oldest metal casting techniques — the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting method used by tribal artisans in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal for over 4,000 years. A wax model is created, coated in clay, heated to drain the wax, and then molten brass is poured in. The clay mould is broken to reveal a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
Is each Dhokra piece truly unique?
Yes — because the clay mould is destroyed in the casting process, every Dhokra piece is absolutely one of a kind. No two pieces are identical. This makes Dhokra art both a functional decorative object and a collector's item.
How do I clean and maintain Dhokra brass?
Wipe with a dry cloth regularly to prevent dust accumulation. For light tarnish, polish with a soft cloth and a small amount of brass polish or lemon-salt paste. Do not use abrasive scrubbers. The natural oxidised surface of Dhokra is characteristic and should not be over-polished.
Who makes Dhokra art at Hastvikas?
Our Dhokra pieces are sourced from tribal Dhokra artisans in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, and from the Bikna village of West Bengal — two of India's most celebrated Dhokra clusters. Each artisan family has practised this technique for multiple generations.
