Sabai Grass

Sabai Grass

Sabai grass is a strong and flexible natural fiber that grows in the forests and hilly areas of West Bengal and Odisha. For many years, local tribal communities have been using this grass to make ropes, but over time, they started using it to create beautiful home products like baskets, mats, trays, bags, lampshades, and furniture. The grass is cut, dried, colored using natural dyes, and then hand-woven into unique designs. These products are not only eco-friendly and long-lasting, but they also carry the warmth of handmade craft.

In Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, the revival and promotion of Sabai grass craft has been significantly driven by Bindo Singh Mishra, the founder behind this initiative. With the support of local training programs and community efforts, women's self-help groups have been empowered to create a variety of Sabai products and earn a sustainable livelihood. What started as a small village skill has now become a source of pride and income for hundreds of rural women. Each product made from Sabai grass is not just useful or decorative—it’s a piece of their story, made with love, care, and a hope for a better future.
